Hi all,
Quite a while ago, i floated an idea in the Workstation working group to clean out the older wallpapers that we ship by default in workstation, and replace them with a new set of Fedora-specific ones that are chosen from all best of the previous Supplemental wallpapers.
NOTE: this will not change THE default wallpaper, which will still be the one that the design team works on each release.
THe WG has approved this proposal [1] in the latest WG meeting, and now i am bringing this up for disussion here.
Basically, the proposal is to ship just the following as the default wallpapers (i.e. what people will see in the Wallpapers tab in the Settings GUI) in Fedora Workstation:
1. Provide the default Fedora wallpaper for the release, that is created for each release by the Fedora Design Team. This will remain the default wallpaper as it currently is. 2. Provide the default wallpaper & lock screen artwork for the upstream desktop release (i.e. the default GNOME wallpaper and GNOME Lockscreen for the release of GNOME being shipped) 3. Remove all the other wallpapers we currently ship and create a new set of the 15 wallpapers from the previous Fedora supplemental wallpapers.
Note also, that 15 was chosen to keep the wallpaper chooser tidy, as it displays them in rows of 3.
cheers,
ryanlerch

Here is a quickpage I just did up to show all the supplemental wallpapers to date, in one place.

What about also including a few of the non-supplimental wallpapers from previous releases? I personally really like F24 and F21, and the F17 fireworks seem almost iconic. Plus, FC5 (although the 3d-button look on the logo seems dated.)
It would be great to have all-time stars wallpapers, winners in a single package...IMHO.

IMHO, these wallpapers are tied to the branding of each individual release, so I would be worried about including these as the standard wallpapers on a default install. The supplemental wallpapers don't really have the same connection to an individual release, and since we have a large back catalog of approved, properly licenced images, this seemed like a good place to base our search on.
One thing to investigate here, however, is should we look into better ways of exposing the wallpapers packaged in Fedora to the user? Currently, these wallpapers are not shown in Software, and the only way to get them is to know the correct package name / fedora release name to install, and use DNF. They aren't really "software", so not sure if they fit in the Software app, although we do have Fonts in there, but the experience provided there for searching for fonts can feel a bit clunky at times too.

I can really get behind this, I think it would be better to leave this as an optional package download. And just announce that we have such a package of legacy/retired wallpapers.

Hi Ryan,
The part of the proposal here I'm confused about -
Is it meant that this would be update every release with the latest batch of Fedora supplemental wallpapers?
Or, is this meant to be a once-in-a-long-while dump of wallpapers that we need to select from the entire back catalog of supplementals?
How often are wallpapers going to be swapped out?
Cheers, ~m

I think it's meant more to be a "greatest hits" than a "dump". I don't think we should go back through the back catalog frequently, but every couple of years we might want to look at changing things up a bit with new entries. (Possibly going from 15 to 18 and not removing older ones?)

I didn't mean anything pejorative by 'dump,' apologies if it came off that way.
If there's 15.... if we pick the top 5 (in terms of the votes they received - we do have that historical data) for each of the past 3 releases that would make it nice and neat. So we could do an update every 3rd release?
Concretely, I've listed out the full size URLs and metadata for this set of 15 below. Here is a set of thumbnails showing the whole set:

Hmmm. I'd actually like to skip this one, because I really don't want us to be condoning photography on railroad tracks. It's way more dangerous than people think, and often illegal.

In order to prevent this from stopping the presses, let's sub in the #6 F24 wallpaper from nuancier.
This probably should have been addressed back in the F24 timeframe. Do you feel we should pull it from the F24 package as well?

I was worried that selecting a set based on the votes would make it lean towards getting too many of one type (like landscapes), but this seems ok.

Oh I must have missed this somehow! I much prefer this set - the variation in color palette and subjects is a lot better than skimming the top off the past few releases. I also *love* symbolically that the dandelion is included.
I believe we should go with your handpicked set, and save for any strong objections from other team members (I haven't seen anyone expressing strong opinions either way) I think you should just go ahead with your set.

as I said as the thread started, I would prefer if we take in more DONE by our contributors. Not submissions grabbed from the net, its really that way that some doing it from one source so for them the contribution is just upload it and fill out the form. Thats a 5 minute job on the other hand we have the ones, who go out and shot. What is definitely a contributions which is more time consuming. We also have to say that a lot of our good photographer stopped contributing to it, well no wonder it must just be blue. Jared is a good example on it, he complained about it before Flock Rochester, so we did the lighthouse shoot in the blue hour and edited it more blueish and wush from all his submission the first one he got in.
So lets honor the people who DO a bit more.
P.S. long term goal is still to replace them with the winners for each release, I dont know why this is so hard to achieve with the desktop/workstation team

Yeah, the idea here is for these to replace the current standard wallpapers that GNOME ships. The reasoning behind using the past supplementals as the source for these was just because they are an awesome set, and licensed appropriately, and submitted by Fedora Users.
How often are wallpapers going to be swapped out?
Ideally, these should not be changed very regularly, as if we remove wallpapers from this package, and someone is using it as their wallpaper, it will disappear.
