Hi Design Friends, In the last email I was inspired by the project name Laughlin and the phrase ' The whole is more than the sum of its parts.' I saw this as an opportunity to push the visual concept of cut and paste. Replication of the same simple shape to make a very complex design. How far can you push it. Something as simple as a line can be pushed pretty far. Here are some links:
http://ffffound.com/image/f66c6f2b56f058f65f07de831ff41764c7a9d726 http://ffffound.com/image/40a9d9f63206e3a4b2f6b095431fd1727070f0fe http://ffffound.com/image/f07eeae06727922c461a1a28f01f7e197fcc21d6 http://www.justinmaller.com/showcase.html (more or less) http://ffffound.com/image/3c4689564b36a005b824a992e685a6651d19ad31 (more or less)
The cut and paste concept would work with any shape. I am going to just take a simple line and push it. I did a pencil concept sketch for a line illustration idea I had. Anyone is welcome to pursue it with me.

There are a lot of great inspirational resources out there I use that are available to you.

As for the deadline, AFAIK we have not yet the dates set, so it will be announced later, but it will probably be some time before Alpha (probably something between 1 and 3 weeks before Alpha freeze to give us enough time to decide on a final concept, to put it in enough shape for alpha and to package it).
One of the suggestions for visualizing the theme for Laughlin was,
"Something that can illustrate the emergence concept, like multiple objects combined to create a new one (more complex). "
The work of Robert Laughlin, who "was awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize in physics for his explanation of the fractional quantum Hall effect. Moreover he argues for emergence which is a concept that says 'The whole is more than the sum of its parts.' Fedora is more than the sum of its software."
Visually I think this concept could make a nice theme. It could be cool to use objects or phenomena from nature to illustrate it. e.g., many drops of water making a stream or whatnot. Do you have any ideas on how we might visualize this?
BTW Tatica put together some mockups around a atomic theme: http://tatica.fedorapeople.org/Themes/F14/
I think the backdrop of atomos.svg is nice - with a bit of tweaking it could make a nice abstract pattern.

Kyle, I like a lot the abstractness of this concept. Can you add a shade of blue to it, to match our traditional visual style? Which apps have you used to create it? Are sources available for the image, so we can play with it?
Nicu, It is just a pencil sketch of a concept intended to get some creative juices flowing. The idea will need to be created digitally. Anyone is welcome to start it off with me if they are interested.

Just as an update Tatica posted some great mockups based on the pencil sketch, some of the IRC convo with a link:

I have absolutely no idea how to make myself such thing, how did you do it? Some 3D app?
Hey Nicu, I don't know exactly how he created that, but there is a very cool Path Effect in Inkscape that will yield similar results. The effect is called "Stitch Sub-Paths." You can find the online documentation from the Inkscape manual here:
http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Paths-LivePathEffects-StitchSub...
It's a very fun tool, with lots of features under the hood that you need to mess around with before you can really wrap your head around it.
Hope that was helpful! :Daniel

Hi Cata I think any concept done by one of us will refer to some idea ever produced. All art (or design) awakens abstract thought or remember something that has already been done. ;)
HiJef I also did not know this Extension until last year. ;)

Very impressive for a concept as it completely fooled my eyes thing that was done on computer. I will look forward other concepts too. Good job. Also could you put your concept in high resolution next time?

A lot of her pieces are one type of ordinary household kind-of objects repeated many times to make striking single objects:

Hi, all!
I have started work on an idea for a wallpaper. It's pixel art. This is something completely new for me and kind of an experiment but I always wanted to do it. I can't promise I've bitten off more than I can chew, though. This might all end in tears.... ;)
Here's a little preview... Working on this is actually oddly relaxing. :)
