I've been following the posts on this subject and here is what I am thinking:
What if its an outer space scene with stars (having animated twinkles ... for the boot-up background image)? There would be asteriods and, may be, one or two planets with 'our' rocket somewhere in the picture. The scene would have a blueish hue to it. Its the kind of thing that is best done with a 3D application like 'Blender' and rendered with V-Ray or Yafray (and retouched in GIMP). I cannot help thinking about a wallpaper I downloaded from CG-Arena ... just to help our imaginations as I can't think of anything closer at the moment. My reference is a bit busy but I hope it paints the right mental pictures.

I also see that we have limited time to agree on this based on design-team Digest, Vol 9, Issue 32

As much as I love that wallpaper idea, I think that we should go with a nice, simple, clean look so users feel like they have a nice working ground that they can install what they want on it and work from the ground up. As I said, it looks awesome, it's just I don't know if everybody would like it.

Hi, The scene is impressing (without any doubt), but the icons stay as patches on it. If such a picture is made to be a background, maybe the icons should look like asteroids, space-shuttles or something of the kind.
This is just an opinion

We could do something lunar based to complement the them that was used in fedora 10.

I think that image is *awesome*, however as Brad pointed already, it is not very usable, it looks very busy and has a lot of small details obscuring the icons. Also, I know he have a couple of people with some degree of Blender experience (some more knowledgeable, some a bit less), but I pretty much doubt we have the level needed to do something as advanced like that.
I also expect some would not like an image like that because it has a "war" message (even if the message is "war in space") but I don't care much about such a complaint.
