Hello all,
As Nicu requested on his blog [1], I'm providing my very own personal feedback about the wallpapers displayed on [2]. I'll give my top 5 (in no particular order) with comments:
* Tatica's "four foundations mosaic" has a clean design, not too overloaded. It's one of my favourite designs, but it has one flaw: it's a great but pretty generic wallpaper when it comes to the Constantine theme. * Tatica's "Pruebas" design is great, the buildings take a bit too much space but well, it's an alpha design. It fits the Constantine theme very well. * Samuele's "4Flowers" is clean, simple and beautiful. It should be a bit more "Fedora blue" IMO. * Nicu/Mo's Underwater mosaic designs are the most generic (in a good sense) and best design ideas IMO. They fit an oriental theme, they fit the Fedora colours and are not too overloaded. * Jayme Ayre's blue Constantine also has a great potential. It fits the Fedora colours, it's not too overloaded but it might have a political/religious connotation?
I didn't chose most of the other themes for one simple reason: too overloaded.
So here you go...my 2 cents as a standard user.

Thanks Steven for starting the ball rolling on this. There is also some (not much, I am not that popular) feedback gathering on my blog comments: http://nicubunu.blogspot.com/2009/07/artwork-for-fedora-12-alpha.html
- Tatica's "four foundations mosaic" has a clean design, not too
overloaded. It's one of my favourite designs, but it has one flaw: it's a great but pretty generic wallpaper when it comes to the Constantine theme.
It is also one of the very few close to what we said is wanted for a default: vector format. Still has a less-than-ideal size for tiles (too close to the icons size) and my use some "bling".
- Tatica's "Pruebas" design is great, the buildings take a bit too much
space but well, it's an alpha design. It fits the Constantine theme very well.
- Samuele's "4Flowers" is clean, simple and beautiful. It should be a
bit more "Fedora blue" IMO.
But we want the pack of 4 additional wallpapers to bring a breath of fresh air, so if it goes there being less blue is not a problem.
- Nicu/Mo's Underwater mosaic designs are the most generic (in a good
sense) and best design ideas IMO. They fit an oriental theme, they fit the Fedora colours and are not too overloaded.
I was amazed about how Mo modified the photos to an impressive result. However, I found the result a bit too blurry and wondered if this is because I resized the photos (reduced with and height in half so they don't take too much space on the web hosting and can be downloaded reasonably, while still having a large resolution). Then I had to study the GIMP source to find which photos were used exactly (wow! intense photomanip there Mo, hats off!). If really big (12MP) photos are needed, I have them available.
- Jayme Ayre's blue Constantine also has a great potential. It fits the
Fedora colours, it's not too overloaded but it might have a political/religious connotation?
I am not worried about the connotations, I just find it too direct but I also like the colors a lot.
I didn't chose most of the other themes for one simple reason: too overloaded.

Yes, it's way too blurry right now. I prefer the first versions if you look at the wiki history. One other thing that bothers me with this image: it looks like 2 mosaic pictures have been used, but they don't have the same "angle", they are not on the same "surface". This disturbs my brain somehow.

Indeed, it is composed from two photos. If needed, please speak *now* and I can take a whole lot on new photos.

Ok, throwing in my towel as well.
* Bridge Sea Moon by bioinfornatics -- interesting concept, pretty awesome blender work, but distorted and too complex for default wallpaper * (four foundations) mosaic by tatica -- closest to our original idea of doing something abstract. Also it is a very solid base and can be expanded a lot during the process, we can even deviate a bit from the tiled mosaic. IMHO best candidate for going with as default. Of course, we need to make sure the mosaic does not clash with icons. * Pruebas by tatica -- too little contrast, foggy, dark, very interesting concept, but not good for default (too complex). But, we should perhaps consider it for the 4 supplementary wallpapers * cubes mosaic by ainzinga -- frankly I don't like this one, looks more like a mess made of paper squares than mosaic to me. Also in the current installment it's too bright and too blurry * Wallpaper mosaica by mythcat -- the texture is too strong and contrastive, the colours feel bland, but interesting concept * mosaic by brejc8 -- reminds me of the Gears proposal from F10 theming contest... the white background would be a real eyesore on desktop, but the concept is IMHO good * various wallpapers by by Jayme Ayres -- generally an interesting approach, perhaps some of these would be good candidates for the 4 supplementary wallpapers * 4flowers and 4horses by Samuele Storari -- awesome, too complex for default, but very good candidate for the 4 supplementary wallpapers * underwater mosaic by Mo and Nicu -- really great photo manip, needs still a lot of work, but definitely a candidate for default
In short: * good candidates for default wallpaper (IMHO): * (four foundations )mosaic by tatica * underwater mosaic by Mo and Nicu * good candidates for the 4 supplementary wallpapers (IMHO): * pruebas by tatica * mosaic by brejc8 * 4flowers and 4horses by Samuele * Fedora-wall-jayme-VII
Note that we should also discuss what to put into the package for Alpha and how (will we ship [in Alpha] all the wallpapers as one slide-show, or separately, or a combination of these? Will we ship [in Alpha] all the submitted concepts, or make a narrower selection?)

This one has a *transparent* background which probably is supposed to be used with a composition. I can see us going with this style for the website banners/counter if the default is a mosaic.

Pretty much agree.

Tatica, you promised a couple more designs, right?
Hello.
Yes, I was working on 2 more mockups but I didn't have time, this is the mockup I was working but is incomplete :S

btw.. I forgot my feedback
I like almost all the designs; but I think that fedora artwork has always change with every release; but I feel that we are enclosing in a box. I know that my mockup might not be the best, but in fedora 12 I'll like to see some landscaping... some freedom on our designs.

With landscapes we have a lot to learn from the failure during the F11 cycle: it has to look beautiful, not fake and deliver some message. Is not easy to do. We will also need some *really good* photos as a starting base (for example I think I have a good grasp of the technical side of doing landscape photography, but I don't have any such photo to be proud of).
As for getting out of the box, I am thrilled we have this time a strong contender using flowers and I hope we will include in the end something like tatica's "kids" wallpaper (http://www.flickr.com/photos/tatadbb/3723154997/) even if it is not listed on the F12 Artwork page.
I agree with Steven and Nicu. I think that best candidates for official wallpaper are:
* Tatica's "Pruebas"
* Samuele's "4 horses"
* Nicu/Mo's Underwater mosaic designs
Question: alpha banner can be generic (like F11 Alpha banner) or it must be themed?
Thank you.

I think Charlie's bird mosaic style may be an interesting take on the banner and it may be a good fit for the "underwater mosaic" theme.

Hi Mo, I think that alpha banner can be more generic. It should point only to a simple idea, like "a new fedora version is coming"...then with beta banner we can definitely use the new theme.
I'll submit alpha banner proposals to Design Team in the course of first week of August.
On 07/30/2009 04:45 PM, Paolo Leoni wrote:

It would be nice to have it themed, but as it is early so we don't know the final theme, we may have to go with a generic one.
So Paolo, I take you want to work again on the banner: I think you can wait one more week until we should have the graphics already packaged (it should be enough time to prepare the banner after that), and if by then we have one single strong contender for the default go with its theme. If not, use something generic.
Hy there,
hmm, short question ... why did'nt we use the gallery2 testinstance for that? I personally have some trouble to point out wich picture in a wiki I like in a wiki-table without the possibility to point exactly to the picture I want and only copy&paste the Link to the image, anyway. I personally like https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/File:Fedora-wall-jayme-III.jpg [1] https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/File:Fedora12_mosaic-glow_mo.png [2] https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/File:Fedora-wall-jayme-VII.jpg [3]
Hopefully someone is able to mixture those up: The Constantine "head" and/or sword [3] in the mosaic style with the glow [2]. that would be very nice I think ;-) Also I like the mosaic style for later on boot screens, splash screens and banners...

I can think of a couple of reasons for not using the gallery: - very few of us asked for accounts, so most of the people having proposals would not be able to post there; - it is a *test* instance, once the test is over (with positive or negative conclusions), the URLs will not work any more, breaking archives, blog posts and so on.
I would like to share impression. «4 Flowers» would be great as the default wallpaper. It produces an image of something light.
But it needs to be polished much, just like Samuele did in his previous work. :-)
Sorry about this ...
I see wallpaper is great .
But "4 flowers" and "Constantine" ?!
I really can see the connection ...

The Connection is explained in the past e-mail, it's in the meaning of the flower Eastern Flower for an Easter's Emperor, and I think you don't need that I have to explain you why 4 :D Constantine wasn't only war, wasn't only a conquer, but a great art lover and supported he created a lot of garden in Bisanzio, making it not only a capital, but a real treasure.
