KDE 4.3.4, F12.
IIRC the "Switch User" function hasn't worked for me in any version of KDE 4. I just get a blank pop-pup window with nothing to select except the "Close" widget.
Is this a known problem or is it yet another consequence of incompatible config files between versions?

It's never not worked for me. ??

While we're at it, any bugs filed (rh or kde)?
I'd be interested in any reproducers and/or if anyone else is seeing this.

I just tried it in KDE version 4.3.95 and it worked :-) Only the network wasn't accessible.

No, since it doesn't really bother me that much.
However for laughs I did just try it on a new user account and it worked correctly. So it's probably another of those "old settings" things which do so much to make the user's life more interesting. Last time it was Amarok, and the workaround was to avoid GTK themes as you suggested, but this time I don't know where to start.
Any hints on what to clean up would be welcome.

FWIW, I just tried the "Switch User" function and it is actually working for me and didn't used to...

Somewhat OT, but assuming that at least a large chunk of people use gdm (default for DVD installation), shouldn't this option be disabled if kdm is not active? (I'm using gdm and switch users doesn't really do anything besides password-locking X)

There's a reason we do not recommend installing from the DVD at all. Always use the KDE Live CD.
That said, with recent versions of the DVD, if you select only KDE and not GNOME nor XFCE, you get KDM, not GDM.

Oh, OK.

Not really a solution. A. It's a bug. The switch user option should be deactivated if KDM is not present - or at least, some kind an error message should be displayed instead of silently failing. B. People who require the switch user option may also have different DE preferences. (In my case, my wife uses GNOME and I'm using KDE)
I understand that I'm barking at the wrong tree here. (This is an upstream GDM/KDM issue), but you should agree with me that the current situation is far from being ideal...

IIRC Gnome also has a "switch user" feature. I presume (without checking) that both DE's follow some Free Desktop standard for doing this. If so, they should in theory work with either kdm or gdm, but maybe I'm delusional about standards in this area.

afaik, there is no standard here. kde/kdm does it one way, gdm/gnome another. And iirc, kde's user switching feature existed first, if it matters.

Right. KDE/KDM starts a new X display with the new user, whereas (as far as I know) GNOME/GDM lets the new user take over the existing X display, which is supposedly faster, but harder to implement. There's also ConsoleKit magic involved in the G* implementation whereas for the K* one, the new X display just gets registered as a new session with ConsoleKit by the regular KDM ConsoleKit integration.

I believe you are wrong. GDM opens a new X session in the next vacant TTY. At least it does so on two different F11 and F12 machines I use.

OK, might be (I'm not that familiar with GDM, sorry), but whatever it does, it's not the same as what KDM does. :-(

Basically worked for me except using crtl-alt-F8 to get back to original login put just a couple of white squares on a black screen. From there ctrl-alt-F7 brought me back to where I was. From there I had to use the switch-user gui to get back to original login.
This is rc2 (4.3.95). So gui method works OK but ctrl-alt-F keys is flaky.

Try ctrl-alt-F1 to get back to the original screen.

Slightly OT, but X is not necessarily on vt1. On my system it's on vt7. There's a thread about it on the main Fedora list: http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/users/2010-January/365121.html

Yes, I tend to agree. Looked similar to what I see after doing suspend to ram or disk and *trying* to come back. Using free radeon drivers for mobo resident video. Works OK on on F11 install with same mobo but proprietary drivers (not available on F12).

We're kind of getting away from the point here. My X server is running on vt7, so the problem Rex mentions is not germane to my particular issue (and I have an Intel mobo with Intel video).
To repeat, the menu item "Switch User" shows a blank pop-up and nothing else. It does this the first time and every other time. It doesn't do it on a fresh user account, where it works correctly. The obvious inference is that there's problem with an old config file in my own account. I'm asking for clues on where to look.
