It uset to be possible to set the behavior for thread expansion. For certain folders, like the one I pipe this list to, for example, I prefer to have all threads permanently expanded. I can't seem to get that to happen any more... anyone?

I don't recall ever seeing the option on a per-folder basis. You can default to open, default to closed or default to closed with threads containing new or Important messages open - which is my choice. As far as I can recall that has always been the list of options. Could you be thinking of the last one?

It was possible in the earlier versions. I've gotten so used to KDE 4.1.85 and Kmail 1.10.92 that I can't remember how I used to do it. I believe you could set a folder when you were in it, and it would remember - then there was a global setting that affected everything. All I know is, I could set things the way I liked them, and they would 'stick' - now, I find myself having to constantly expand threads as I am refreshing my memory about the flow of a conversation.

You don't say what version of what program you're talking about.
I will assume that you are referring to kmail 1.10.92, which I have installed from the fedora kde-testing repository. It seems that kmail has changed dramatically in this area. You want to click the Select Aggregation Mode button to right hand side of the search box above the list view. That will drop down a menu which includes Configure...
This opens a dialog box and you want to select the Groups, Threads and Sorting tab. You will find what you are looking for in here. In particular, the Thread Expand Policy setting will control expanding threads. This seems to be a global setting, though.

Sorry about not mentioning version, but, you guessed correctly, and your suggestion has worked, at least partially. I prefer to keep them all expanded if I have to, but I would prefer the old folder-by-folder configurability...
I like to have the oldest on top so that I can work my way through, deleting as I deal with them. This is also forgotten each time I open the folder. I tried setting, under aggregation mode, setting folder always uses this aggregation, but it has no effect on my scenario.

This is an example of some changes in the kmail user interface that I think are quite surprising.
Earlier releases made sort choices persistent when clicking the column headings. They are no longer persistent.
Furthermore, changes to this sort order using the new button, Change Sort Order are not persistent either.
You need to use the Configure... choice of the Select Aggregation Mode button under the Groups, Threads and Sorting tab to make any persistent change to sort criteria and order.
Very surprising.

have you tried setting the Aggregation button to 'Standard Mailing List' - I think that's what you're seeking. Oldest messages at the top and they 'stick' that way as you enter/exit folders and the program
