Services need to be stopped before uninstallation of the corresponding package.
How about daemons?

What's the difference? If it starts with an initscript, I'd expect that the terms "service" and "daemon" are interchangeable.

By daemons, I meant more in the lines of those programs that run in the background, but do not put an initscript in /etc. Userspace daemons for instance. e.g. jack, pulseaudio type daemons...

Ping? Another example would be gnome-settings-daemon. Don't they need to be killed when they are uninstalled?

If you are removing the running desktop out from under itself, I suspect this is the least of your problems.
