When I rip a CD I want to add the contents to Amarok's database. It would appear that the way to do this is by rescanning the entire system.
1) Is this true? Is there no way to simply add the newly-ripped material without rescanning everything?
2) Even if it is true, it simply doesn't work. I can visit the new folder via the Files view, and Amarok duly sees it, but on returning to the Local Music view, nothing. The problem is that I want to add the new stuff to my media player (a Galaxy Nexus), but the GN is only visible in the Local Music view, not the Files view, so there's no way to achieve this. Very frustrating.
<rant> I used to like Amarok back in the KDE 3 days. I have no wish to return to KDE 3, but I'm afraid Amarok got too ambitious and buggy. For one thing, I find the UI really quite hard to understand, so the above problems might just be PEBKAC. </rant>

Apologies for following up to myself, but I neglected to mention that this is on F16 fully updated with amarok-2.5.0-8.fc16.x86_64.

Have you tried Settings > Configure Amarok > Collection Check "watch folders for changes" and "Scan folders recursively"
That's what I have turned on and everything seems to work ok for me. I have not tested your exact scenario though, so no guarantees...

That does work for me but only after Amarok is restarted.

Yes, I have both those already checked, to no avail.
I restarted Amarok. Nothing.
I rebooted my system. Nothing.
I went to the Tools menu and did a Full Rescan. Nothing.
Something about this is clearly broken. It may be my setup, but there are simply no clues. I could of course zero out my config and start afresh, and I guess I'll have to try try that as a last resort, but at present my Amarok as installed does not do what it says on the tin.
It might be time to switch to Rhythmbox. After all, I just want a basic music player that can also send stuff to my phone. I suspect that's what 90% of people also want.

Just for kicks I tried zeroing out my Amarok config, i.e. I renamed .kde/share/apps/amarok and restarted the app. I then set up the folders to be scanned, namely a single tree below my Music folder.
The console then filled with hundreds of warnings about kmimetype not understanding certain file types. The listed files appeared to be every single file in my account, not just the Music folder (presumably the latter didn't give errors but frankly I couldn't be bothered checking).
Is there some other local config info that I failed to reset? If not, I'll just report this to Bugzilla and move on.

There are a number of amarok* files under .kde/share/config/, not sure if renaming them will fix your issues but worth a try.

I tried that, in fact I again moved everything Amarok-related to one side, logged out and in again, and fired up the app. It asked me where my music collection was, rescanned it, and *still* doesn't find the new material I added the other day. Which BTW is simply a CD ripped to MP3, as are many of my other files which do work.

One handy related tool in amarok is the commandline amarokcollectionscanner (see end for usage)
You could try running:
amarokcollectionscanner /path/to/dir/with/ripped_cd/
and see what happens. this tool should be fairly verbose in it's findings and listing any possible errors or problems it encounters.
-- rex

Thanks Rex, I'll keep that in mind. However I had a brainwave in the meantime. It turns out the ID3 tags on the new material were incorrect, so Amarok was showing the files in a different part of the forest.
Amarok is declared innocent until further notice.
But I still think it's too complex and baroque.
Thanks again to all who tried to help, and apologies for the noise.
