Thanks to the efforts of several folks (namely Christoph Wickert), we're getting close to bringing lightdm to fedora.
Per http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/LightDM, LightDM is a cross-desktop display manager. In short, it's an alternative to gdm or kdm for example.
Want to try it out? If you're comfortable with switching login managers and being able to back out and fix things if things go awry... :) ... we've some experimental builds in kde-testing repos (f16/f17):
yum --enablerepo=kde-testing install lightdm lightdm-gtk-greeter
and edit /etc/sysconfig/desktop to include: DISPLAYMANAGER=/usr/sbin/lightdm
(and reboot)
and later if you're daring, yum --enablerepo=kde-testing install lightdm-kde and edit /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf to include: greeter-session=lightdm-kde-greeter
We're currently gathering feedback and a bit more testing before submitting this for formal review to be included in fedora.
To forestall the inevitable question: Do we have plans to replace kdm? No, not right now, but depending on how well lightdm works, maybe sometime in the not-too-distant future (f18/f19+).

Oh, and so you can play with the sources if you like, here's my own current work in progress: http://rdieter.fedorapeople.org/rpms/lightdm/
which should match what we have in the kde-testing repos.

so jreznik and I were testing a bit today, and found a few buglets already:
'use previous session' seems not to work (at least in kde greeter)
restart doesn't work. if currently in kde, it at least ends your session. either way, seems to try to do something, but then gets stuck.
shutdown (at login screen) does nothing. in session, seems ok.

Hi Rex,
Love your work.

I live for thrills :)
Seems OK although when I first came to the greeter it had "previous session" set and didn't seem to want to authenticate me. It's possible, but not likely, that I made a typo in my password. Once I changed it to "KDE plasma session" all was good.
Seems a bit slow though (thought it might have hung on a black screen) and their was a text console artefact visible between plymouth and the greeter.
Otherwise all good.
Cheers, Brad

We know about this issue - the password was ok. Previous session does not work.

Yep, another thing we have to take a look.
Thanks for testing!
R.
Otherwise all good.
