rails 3.0.x in F15

Based on my discussions with the community and various parties that have a vested interest in this, I feel that it is a good idea to move the rubygem-rails packages to rails 3.0.x for F15 so that we don't get left behind and stay up to date w/ the latest / greatest upstream releases. Unfortunately this process isn't as simple as updating the 6 rails packages (rails itself and the active/action* packages), there are many various gems which will need to be updated as well to work with Rails 3. Based on my findings w/ deltacloud [1], the update process itself isn't so difficult, but some of the following gems will need to be updated in Fedora for things to properly work. Shebang

Hello, Is there some guideline how shebang should look? There are commonly used two versions: 1) #!/usr/bin/env ruby 2) #!/usr/bin/ruby I like the first version, because it allows more freedom and usage of 'environment-modules' for example. Nevertheless also the second variant has its advantages, e.g. reliable tool chain is assured even if environment changes. Any thoughts on this? Vit

Hello, all: I have updated rubygems to 1.5.0. If you see some issues with new rubygems, please feel free to file bugs. Some notes I have noticed for now: - Some gem based packages install ruby wrapper scripts under /usr/bin which contain something like ----------------------------------------------------------------- #!/usr/bin/ruby # This file was generated by RubyGems. require 'rubygems' version = ">= 0" if ARGV.first =~ /^_(.*)_$/ and Gem::Version.correct? $1 then version = $1 ARGV.shift end gem 'foo', version load 'foo' ----------------------------------------------------------------- The last line "load 'foo'" style is now obsolete and rubygems 1.5.0 will no longer accept this. For example, /usr/bin/rake in rubygem-rake-0.8.7-2.fc12.noarch will no longer work like: ----------------------------------------------------------------- $ /usr/bin/rake /usr/bin/rake:19:in `load': no such file to load -- rake (LoadError) from /usr/bin/rake:19 ----------------------------------------------------------------- The pkgs containing scripts under /usr/bin with this old style needs rebuilding. Note that - currently mass rebuild for F-15 is in progress, and once rebuilt pkgs are tagged into dist-f15, this will no longer be the issue. - also for rubygem-rake, newly rebuilt rubygem-rake-0.8.7-4.fc15 is already in dist-f15 buildroot, so on dist-f15 buildroot $ rake test or so should not fail with this change. - Some gem based pkgs generate .required_paths under %geminstdir. Packaging rack-based applications for Fedora

Hi, I want to ask if there are any policies or guidelines for packaging 'rack-based' (Sinatra/Rails/..) projects for Fedora. Since I started packaging Deltacloud API (Sinatra app) I got into situlation that I want to install it as a gem and then run it by 'deltacloudd' command (will basically spawn thin). But the application itself is installed into $RUBYGEM_PATH. So my questions are: * Where should be these application installed? My preference is to install them inside /usr/lib or /usr/share directory. * Should be they marked as a 'rubygem-*'? My opinion is *no*, because they will not provide 'gem' functionality, since they are not 'libraries'. * What if they are already packaged as 'gem', should be they installed using 'gem install'? My opinion here is that it doesn't matter what extension is used, it's still 'packaged source', so it can be 'unpacked' by gem install. * Is there something else I forget? rails 3 is in rawhide

I am pleased to announce that the last packages required for Rails 3 support in Fedora have been pushed to rawhide and successfully built in anticipation of the Fedora 15 release. Rails 3.0.3 is a major upgrade from 2.3.8 which brings some API incompatibilities as a trade off for many new features. Rails 3 has been submitted and accepted as a feature for Fedora 15. http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/Rails_3.0.3 Many many thanks goes to Fedora contributors Vit Ondruch and Minnikhanov for all of their hard work packaging gems and reviewing packages.
