Hi folks!
Doing the 'desktop_menus' validation test for Final RC-1.2 - the awful one where you have to run every app on the live image - I just found that Cheese doesn't seem to work with my webcam any more:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1508706
it definitely used to, this seems to be a new issue in F27. But it looks a lot like it may be hardware-related, so it'd be great if folks with different webcams could try out Cheese in F27 and report whether it works for them. Please reply to this mail or in the bug. Thanks!

... But my Creative Technology, Ltd webcam doesn't work. Seems like it's a problem with USB plug and play cams.

I suspect it's rather down to which video colorspaces the hardware supports. Thanks for the data though :)

So which component is at fault? Just cheese?

That I don't know, though I'd guess cheese or whatever package the v4l bits are in.

Could be kernel, any part of the gstreamer1 stack, and maybe v4l-utils, it could also be third party gstreamer plugins too if enabled.

The bugzilla has this:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1508706
libv4l2: error set_fmt gave us a different result then try_fmt! libv4l2: error set_fmt gave us a different result then try_fmt!
Which points for most to a kernel bug and possibly a libv4l2 bug.
Either way as mentioned in the bug, I need someone who can reproduce this to do:
LIBV4L2_LOG_FILENAME=/tmp/log cheese
And then attach /tmp/log to the bug.
Lets keep any further discussion of this in bugzilla.
Regards,
Hans

I tested with two devices, on onboard one on my Lenovo X1 Gen3 and a Logitech HD Webcam C510, they both worked but it took Cheese ages to start up like a minute.

See the following bug report regarding the slowness: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=782627
It also causes trouble for Users panel: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=783789
