I've got Fedora Core 3 using kernel 2.6.9-1.667, the default one that ships with FC3. I have a SiS 735 chipset motherboard with an Athlon 1800+ XP, and 1 GB of DDR.
FC3 detected my sound card as using the snd-intel8x0 driver, which is the driver I used on my last distro on the 2.4 kernel . The output for the card detection test was flawless. Output via ALSA and OSS work flawlessly as well. But any sounds output through ESD get garbled and 'staticky' sounding.
This didn't happen on my last distro, which was Gentoo running a 2.4.22 kernel.
Anyone got a clue?
Hi,
I installed a fresh copy of FC3 on my machine. The default nv drivers work fine. But I can't get dual head working with nv drivers by editing xorg.conf. "system-config-display" does not do any thing when I select "Use dual head" and click ok. Then I cancel to go out of the screen.
So I do a init 3 install the NVidia drivers from the site. Change xorg.conf and then do a init 5 and my dual display works fine. But when I reboot the system it does not work. With out the intial graphical part I can go upto the login screen and then when X starts it says that displays were found but non have a usable configuration.
Please note that I can use the below configuration file and work on the system with out rebooting after the instalation of the drivers from the NVidia site.
My Card is Asus V9400 Gamer Rdition which used NVidia "MX 4000" GPU.
My xorg.conf is pasted below.

I had exactly the same problem with an ATI Radeon X300 in dual head mode, normal X.org drivers. System-config-display exhibited the same symptoms - would not allow me to configure dual head. Like you I had to creat a suitable config file by hand.
With out the intial graphical part I can go upto the login screen and then when X starts it says that displays were found but non have a usable configuration.
I don't see this problem. I had to disable RHGB or my system would just hang during the boot process. I think the hang was as RHGB tried to exit / GDM tried to start. Remote access via SSH still worked.
Keith.
Seems like I saw this problem before with Core-2. Haven't used "system-config-display" since but manually edit the xorg.conf. We also use the 'nvidia' driver working with Core-3 in a 3-headed configuration.
After you rebooted and X failed, was the xorg.conf trying to use the 'nvidia' driver and not the 'nv' driver? Was the nvidia driver loaded (lsmod).

Hi,
It was trying to use 'nvidia' driver. It works when I set it to use 'nv'.
About whether the module is loaded. I am not quite sure. I do not want to reboot my machine again coz then I will have to do every thing from scrach again. But I can remember that the error log had an error saying that some module did not load. I think it was "glx". Not too sure about this though.
I guess I will submit this to the "fedora-list" and see whether they have any thing to say about it.
Best Regards, Chamil Thanthrimudalige.
