Hi Everyone,
Fedora 28 is released, and this is interesting to learn how was translation completeness for packages and what is required for fedora 29. At this point, Transtats can determine packages which are out of sync[1] (in which languages) and translation volume[2] required for a release. Transtats Jobs[3] sync package with pointing translation platform (DamnedLies and Zanata), Upstream git repository and koji build system. On details page of a package[4] we can see translation statistics from all three places.
+ At a glance translation report for packages as a group (for a release) or as an individual (detail picture). Tool to inspect translation deficiency and errors in final shipment (srpm). - As transtats job scheduling feature is still under development, sync jobs need manual attention. sync with (1) translation platform (2) upstream (3) build system and then update diff.
Please help us identifying more packages[5] to add. Hoping this would be of some help! Quick start is here: http://transtats.xyz/quick-start
thanks, sundeep

Do you plan to add the other languages as well please? Or is this just the test phase and you work only with limited amount of languages?

Is there a reason why you need just a few rather than all languages? By "all languages" I don't literally mean "all existing on Earth" but (examples):
* all supported by Zanata: https://fedora.zanata.org/language/list * all supported by Damned Lies: https://l10n.gnome.org/languages/ * all supported by Fedora: https://pagure.io/system-config-language/blob/master/f/src/locale-list * all supported by glibc: https://sourceware.org/git/?p=glibc.git;a=tree;f=localedata/locales;hb=HEAD
If you need a subset then I suggest:
* top most spoken, * top best supported by Fedora/GNOME/Linux.
I think it's also worth to take a look at KDE/Plasma/Qt.

Rafal
Thanks Rafal,
I get the point. Let me take a look and will update shortly!

Hi Everybody,
The project seems very interesting, actually I really would like to use something like this in the Hungarian FSF - translation tracking is a huge overhead. DamnedLies support is also damned good (pun intended). If you could add Hungarian stats, that would be great. And a question at the end: do you support, or plan to support i18n in the application?

A) http://transtats.xyz/translation-status/package/gnome-initial-setup 90 packages are added as of now, which are pointing to 3 translation platforms.
Q) How many packages are out-of-sync for fedora 29? And for which languages? A) http://transtats.xyz/translation-status/packages Please select individual package to see language details.
Q) How to see translation status for a package built in koji for other build_tags? A) Please run a job at http://transtats.xyz/jobs/yml-based
Q) What is estimated translation volume for fedora 29 across 90 packages for 40 Languages? A) http://transtats.xyz/translation-status/release/fedora-29 Please switch to "Language Wise" view for insights.

Please help us identifying more languages/packages.
1. I think that a list of languages in Zanata has disappeared recently. :-(
2. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_India I think that you have not included all languages of India but I leave the final decision to you.
3. What about British English? Should we treat US English as a basic language and UK English as needing its own translation or ignore the differences?
4. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_Europe#List_of_languages Sort by the number of L1 speakers descending. I think that this list is little misleading because for example it lists multiple dialects of German and Italian as separate languages while (AFAIK) they are not supported by any software. So here is a list of languages spoken by more than 1 million people in Europe which you have not yet included: Armenian, Bulgarian, Croatian, Danish, Albanian, Finnish, Slovak, Norwegian (you may distinguish between Norwegian Nynorsk and Norwegian Bokmål), Tatar, Catalan, Georgian, Belarusian, Lithuanian, Bosnian, Galician, Slovene (or Slovenian), Latvian, Romani, Chechen, Macedonian, Bashkir, Estonian, Chuvash, Kazakh. You may remove from this list the languages which don't have active translators.
4a. I apologize other continents for my lack of knowledge of their languages.
5. I think it is worth checking if these languages which are official languages of some countries or territories have actual active translators: Welsh, Maltese, Azerbaijani, Luxembourgish, Icelandic, Montenegrin, Irish, Scots, Faroese.
6. Also I think we should include Friulian and Scottish Gaelic due to their very active translators.
7. Serbian may need two variants: Cyrillic and Latin. If you support only one variant then maybe you should write which one you support. You may ask the actual translators for their opinion. The same may apply to Kazakh language.
Hoping transtats would be of some help in the process!

Hi,
Just wondering what is the main purpose of transtats, such as objective(s) or target problem(s) aim to solve?
I am bit worried, seeing this kept rolling without knowing how it serves us effective than interfering the communication. Our main platform is fedora.zanata.org not translate.zanata.org. In the past we have seen a number of people mixed up these two and upset themselves. Gnome will be important part for Fedora, however they have their own L10n team. Gnome L10N has their own procedure and coordinators apart from FLP. (e.g. I am a member of gnome-l10n, but neither coordinator nor committer.)
Because I was totally off especially early 2017, and I am sorry if anything I missed out. Could you kindly update/point me if any of such concern has been discussed in the past?
Thanks
noriko

Hi Noriko,
Transtats talks to various services like translation platforms, build system, git repositories, release schedules etc. to have an answer for - how much product release (as-in fedora 29) is translation complete[1]? If not why - which languages? which packages? which strings?
Transtats jobs[2] as-one is a tool to track string change, verify translations, inspect built SRPM for errors etc. And if we just schedule these jobs, automation could be attained. As this part is heavy under-development - I could not say much here now! Basically, transtats contributes to g11n success[3].
Hope this answers.
thanks, sundeep

[Products] tab shows just Release Schedule, nothing for languages, packages or strings. Just for the statistics, Zanata should show most accurate ones (afaik) and so Damnedlies...
A question comes up in my mind, WE ourselves have no full list of packages for certain release, because some come up newly while others become obsolete. Where can you reach the full list of package, and how to know the update for release?

[Jobs] syncs with platforms, build systems, source repositories and calendars. Does this mean, something like, a job pulls certain set of translation from zanata and damnedlies, build, and then push to source repos? Do we schedule this job, why? with what kind of permission? Does this make maintainer really happy?

It seems discussed in i18n fad, anyone there from l10n? There is very interesting part I can see in your slide, under "Fedora Readiness" -> 2 Engagements. This is major problem for l10n and I've been looking for a solution for loooooong. So thank you!!
It is good feature to detect string breakage, but please be careful cz this can kill translator if it is used wrongly. The detection must send a warning to a maintainer, not us. A maintainer is responsible to manually notify us by following the procedure [1]. The goal is to minimize the breakage, not making auto-process for maintainer easily to break and translator to fix. I like to see a feature to send a warning to a maintainer as well counting the number of breakage across releases. From there, we can talk to a maintainer for improvement.

Hi Noriko,
Thank you so much, discussing this :) Many of transtats parts are under-development. I can explain, but I need some time making them.

We have master list. And can create subset. This subset will be linked to each release. For packages it is under development. Similar idea has been implemented for languages.

As of now, transtats just do read operations. Jobs pull stats / language resources to generate meaningful stats / reports. No build or push to the source repository. With fedora deployment, FAS authentication would be available - and then permissions may come into picture. (we have some time deciding on that). I hope to discuss this at flock '18.

Obviously, this is for maintainer. Actually, this ease some QE work.

Let me reinstate that zanata/damnelies can show most accurate statistics. For translators, it seems best to refer the original stats unless any specific need. Here, I am worry, it may results that translator may need to go back and forth between zanata, damnelies, transtats etc.

Oh, that sounds cool, could you please kindly share where we can refer that master list, please? I am most happy to update our wiki page.

I am sorry, due to my own business I no longer am able to attend this time. Could you mind to explain a little more detail about a "job"? I can't believe that this job makes a maintainer happy atm, but might create an unnecessary trouble.

Yeah, I agree, most latest translations stats are with respective translation platforms. Here, idea is just to create some interfaces whereby we can have at-a-glance picture irrespective to underlying translation platform. In fedora we can have packages which may use Zanata, or DamnedLies or Weblate, or Transifex etc. Transtats support multiple platforms and its easy to add more. Hence, its great for over-all picture, but if somebody is only concerned with x number of packages, and all of them are using same translation platform instance - good to refer directly.
Oh, that sounds cool, could you please kindly share where we can refer that master list, please? I am most happy to update our wiki page.
Aah, by master list I didn't mean master list for l10n team. Sorry about that. For me, this is still a grey area. I would be glad if I can have some information on - "how l10n team decide on package list for a fedora release" ?

Jobs are useful to create information to send out warnings and alerts. For example, a job run shall detect a string change/breakage on the basis of which warning/alerts could be generated.

Your "we" seems not us of translators.
"we", I mean community-translators, not limited fedora, refer and use original translation stats when communicating with others for l10n planning/documenting/supporting. This is how separate communities work independently. In this context, referencing at-a-grance picture to others in the conversation, it would make the other upset.
For "somebody" who is not active translator but concerns/manages certain set of packages across multiple projects/platforms such as downstreams (rhel, eap, etc), transtat can give at-a-glance picture for managing l10n effort progress, release by release. I can see transtat works for this particular scope-defined group.
Oh, that sounds cool, could you please kindly share where we can refer that master list, please? I am most happy to update our wiki page.

It is still welcomed if you can share, it might help us to identify complete list :-) If this master list comes from certain group, then that group would be your target audience to approach first.

This job sounds useful when limiting to fedora packages. It would be ideal if this feature can be integrated into zanata. Could you kindly consider the integration?
