Hi,
With the gradual demise of Zanata whose service reliability is getting worse I hear, I am wondering what do people think about moving Fedora Translations to the Weblate platform?
I believe a few people here have tried it and liked it. Of course it is a big job to switch but in the long term it looks more viable. Does it lack any important features compared to Zanata?
Jens
Hi,
Jens, thats not a decision alone by the translation team but I am happy that somebody shares my feeling about zanatas future. I am sure that our infrastructure team would like weblate more then zanata as they would get a Python application and whats even greater it is modular, so getting finally our translation working with our badges system and getting better statistics seems to become easier. The authentification via openID and Fedora is already there, so I am sure they love it
But we should get them into the loop.
What concerns the usabiltity its better as Zanata but it has the same problems, even the statistics are better. There is the same problem, you can see not the amount of changes by a single user (what would be on the end necessary for badges) but I think that can be corrected via plugin.
I would be happy to see this kind of plugins soon, as it would solve some of the problems I have here.

Hi,
if you want to discuss this with Infrastructure team, it will be good to create a thread in Fedora Infrastructure mailing list infrastructure@lists.fedoraproject.org or come to our meeting which is every Thursday on 15:00 UTC. I'm part of the infrastructure team, but I can't speak for whole team.
Personally I will be glad if the Zanata will be replaced. It's hard to work with it.

hi,
I feel like this feature already exists.
Here you can see per user modification on a project: https://hosted.weblate.org/projects/po4a/#history
Here, on my profile you can see all my edits: https://hosted.weblate.org/user/Jibec/
I'm almost certain there is a way to subscribe to this, but I let devs confirm this.

you see just an activity and "wikipedia styled" change marker for badges you would need the amount of strings

nice that it goes 2 years back, in zanata you are enforced to have a look at all the translators of a team end of the month or its gone. But speaking in general, have a overview for the members of the team and overview in percentage with an ranking would be a) nicer and b) boosts the translation

Not really. At least in the user profile you can go back further (though with a clicky UI), and you have a REST interface to get the data and present as you wish.
Not that this small correction would make all the other points disappear...

The single thing that worries me is the translation memory. I feel like that for any other features, Weblate wins.
The translation memory in Zanata is really efficient and saves me a lot of time. In weblate, we'll have to build our own and I'm unsure how good the Weblate's one can be and/or how much work that means to administrate it.
I'm glad someone bring this debate here! For sure I'll be please to help administration :) FYI, among multiple other things, Weblate allow teams to set-up review processes, we should really identify the way we want to work.
making this thread active again, with an aim to have more inputs on this.
how should we move here, what should be next steps here?
+1 move to Weblate

As discussed on IRC, we probably need: 1. Public message from red hat about the end of zanata (so we can use it in our communication). Brian or Ben should be able to do it. 2. Common agreement of what we need, and what weblate answer and doesn't. we don't choose weblate because we are fans, but because it answers our needs. And I'm sure we need some developments and it requires funding. 3. We have to elaborate main lines of a migration plan.
As this is a big subject, I propose a meeting on Monday 13th, at noon, French time: https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/france/strasbourg
Everyone willing to work on this subject is welcome. The only requirement is to know bot zanata (fedora.zanata.org) and weblate (hosted.weblate.org).
I assume the migration plan should be discussed and validated with the community while Flock 2019 (Budapest).
Dear all,
Please consider the fact that in free version of Weblate there are no group permissions, and anybody can change your translations.

Hello,
do you feel like this may be a problem? I understand the Weblate logic is the same as wikipedia. Edits are made easy, and change tracking is complete, so you can get alerts and review features. This often is useful to correct typos or markup even if you're not a speaker of the language.
What kind of group permissions do you think we should have?
Technically speaking, we can't set group permissions if we use hosted.weblate.org. But if we host it, we can manage groups. I can do it with self-hosted, which you can also try using docker or yunohost.
As far as I know, the Fedora translation platform is important, so I don't imagine the council/fesco/infra teams saying it's OK to use an external hosting. And when we had transifex (just before zanata), we were captive of the transifex developer because we didn't host transifex ourselve...
Have a nice day
